Sildenafil tablets were launched as the first-ever ED treatment for the first time after being prescribed by a GP on the NHS, a company said on Friday.
The company, based in London, will offer the drug to the patients in South London, the company said, adding the company was confident that the drug would be prescribed on the NHS and the treatment would be available through other private services.
Sildenafil tablets are available in 20mg, 40mg and 80mg doses, the company said.
Sildenafil has been in demand since the drug was first launched in 2003 but the drug has already had to wait for a major boost in demand, with the majority of men experiencing erectile dysfunction.
In a statement, the company said it had no plans to make such a launch until the market is wider, but said the new-to-the-market tablets would be available on the NHS.
Sildenafil was available on the NHS under the brand name Viagra UK, which has been under the brand name Cialis UK since 2018.
The company also said the company was confident of the drug's effectiveness and the potential for its effects to be felt in other patients.
In a separate statement, the company said that the drug was effective in about 60 per cent of the men who took it and its side effects were similar to those experienced with other ED drugs.
The company said that the drug's patent was valid until 2017 and has been granted by the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) following its approval.
A spokesman for the company said: "Our commitment to the public and the NHS is to provide a safe and appropriate treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) in men and the quality of their relationships. We are delighted to offer Sildenafil as our first-ever treatment for the condition.
He added: "The high success rate of our treatment reflects our commitment to improving the quality of men's lives and our belief that men are always better equipped to make informed decisions."
Sildenafil is the first medicine for erectile dysfunction to be approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in the UK, following the launch of the erectile dysfunction medicine in 2003.Erectile dysfunction is a common condition which affects millions of men across the world. It is characterised by the difficulty in achieving or maintaining an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse.
There are three main groups of men in the world – men under 40, under 50 and over 65.
According to figures from the World Health Organisation, around half of all men between the ages of 18 and 64 will experience some form of erectile dysfunction, and half of these will have this condition.
In 2011, the NHS reported that there were more than 1,300 men in the age of 50 who had erectile dysfunction, and about 1,200 men in the age of 25 who had the condition, according to the NHS.
While the condition is more common in older men, it is more likely to be present in younger men and it can have some impact on relationships.
The NHS will now be able to offer the drug to the patient who has been prescribed it by a GP.
